About & editorial policy

Beacon9 is a directory index of active websites, maintained in the manner of a curator's reference catalogue. The project began from a simple premise: that useful things on the web are not always easy to locate, and that a structured, human-reviewed index remains a practical tool even in an era of search engines. The index is organised into 22 sections covering the principal subject areas represented by the sites it holds. Each section contains entries selected for topical fit and basic activity — the curator does not rank by popularity or traffic, but rather by whether a site clearly represents what its category describes. Submissions to Beacon9 are accepted from site owners directly. The process is straightforward: submit a URL and select the most appropriate section. Accepted entries appear in the index without charge. The curator reviews each submission before listing it; sites that are inactive, ambiguous in subject matter, or duplicates of existing entries may be declined. The index currently holds 830 entries across its 22 sections. This figure changes over time as new submissions are accepted and inactive sites are removed. The Sundry & Miscellany section is the largest, reflecting the reality that much of the web resists easy classification. Chance & Wagering is also notably large, documenting the volume of online gaming operators currently active. Beacon9 does not accept payment for inclusion, does not rank entries by commercial criteria, and does not endorse the services listed. It is offered as a reference tool for anyone navigating the web with a specific subject in mind.
